BJC Awards to Primary Schools

In 2012 B.J.C. made its first two Awards of £500 each to St. Paul’s C.of E. Primary School N.W.7. and Our Lady of Lourdes Primary school N.12. to fund the teaching of chess as a curriculum subject.

In 2013 we made a furher award to St Paul's C. of E. Primary School, N11.

These Awards represent half of a full year’s payment to teach chess as a curriculum subject to all of Year 3 at these schools. We work with our friends at Chess in the Schools and Community, who provide the teacher, the course and materials as part of our joint aim to spread chess throughout Primary schools.

We at B.J.C. believe passionately that chess should be on the curriculum for all Primary school children. There is a great deal of evidence that chess enhances educational skills in many areas. In particular children can concentrate better, became more skilled in mathematics, and learn about focussing – vital for those many children who are all over the place at this age! Chess teaches appreciation of strategy, as well as helping children to deal with the hardest lesson of all – how to lose.

We intend to continue making awards to Primary schools in the London Borough of Barnet. Watch this space for more news!
