Barnet Junior Chess

Playing for the Barnet teams

This page is separated into two parts: Primary School Chess and Secondary School Chess.

Primary School Chess

Contact Angela Eyton for more information

Barnet Junior Chess enters teams for the English Primary Schools Chess Association Inter-Association Championships. They compete with teams from all over the country, e.g. Sussex, Somerset and Yorkshire. Players going to school or living in Barnet and neighbouring boroughs are eligible for the 3 teams: Under 11, Under 9 and Girls Under 11.

How can you play for Barnet in EPSCA?

How to join Barnet EPSCA Squad

Please note some boroughs (like Westminster) are 'middle ground', where you have a choice of counties to represent. You should still join us, though!

The selection committee looks at performance in Barnet and EPSCA designated tournaments when assessing players for the teams and for deciding the board order, as well as performance in previous team events and other local and national tournaments.

We also participate in EPSCA warmup tournaments. County player are prepared to travel miles just for these. They generate a very competitive field too and lead to some tough chess games. These happen a month or so before the finals.

Secondary School Chess

We participate in competitions like the SCCU Junior Jamboree. Please note, for National events at this level there is no Barnet team - most of our players compete under Middlesex, run by the same person (Robin). Middlesex compete in the National Youth Chess Association Jamboree, another prestigous one-day tournament.

Please note that eligibility for Middlesex is slightly different:
